Honors Of The Association

Award #8

For answering the call...
"If  You Can't Build A Rebreather, You Shouldn't Dive A Rebreather."

It is with great pleasure that the CEDU Recognizes and Presents the "Honors of the Association"  Award to the following individual for outstanding achievement in the Design, Construction and Use of HomeBuilt Closed Circuit Rebreathing Apparatuses. (And More...)

Jonathan

Jonathan with PALS O2 Rebreather

Without instruction, coaching, reverse engineering or plagiarism, the above named individual has designed, built, dived, and shared his enthusiasm and dive toys with friends, family, and the world at large.

CEDU Honors of the Association

This CEDU Honors of the Association is presented to Jonathan, of Songtan, Korea.

Jonathan has accomplished so much with so little.  Living in a war zone, in the shadow of the DMZ, he has developed and tested self contained diving equipment just like a certain Frenchman did many years ago during WW2.  And, like that Frenchman, Jonathan had to develop his equipment right under the eye of a force in residence.  His laboratory (more on that later) would be the subject of daily infiltration and occupations of insurgency forces deployed from the nearby military complex which overshadows his Lab.

Jonathan did not let the constant flow of military personnel deter him from his mission.  Over a three year period he researched his project and with some help, encouragement, and inspiration from others (including a commercial diving friend and the CEDU), he produced his first rebreather which he calls PALS.

The PALS, (Plumbing Attachment Life Support) is a closed circuit manual addition oxygen rebreather.  It has dual horseshoe shaped counterlungs, a clear axial flow scrubber canister, DSV with unidirectional valves and the cutest little oxygen bottle found this side of a jet aircraft ejection seat.  Expert workmanship and great attention to detail is seen throughout this unit.  The self compensation neck strap of unique design is a nice touch.)

Much time was spent to research, develop, fabricate and prepare his PALS for its first use.  After a 15 minute "couch dive" he was ready to take the plunge.   For Jonathan's first rebreather dive the many additional hours spent in instruction from his Korean Commercial Diving friend, Mr. Lee, must be mentioned and praised, as it was, quite possibly, the very knowledge needed to "keep him from drowning like a kitten".

Jonathan in the Tank

Taking the plunge alone with his PALS.

It was a "Baby, oh baby, oh baby!" moment when he realized that something he built for next to nothing was keeping him alive.  Another homebuilt rebreather diver just caught the disease.

The PALS was Jonathan's first homebuilt rebreather, but it will not be his last, as a PALS II and a MicroPALS are currently being developed.  One has a greater capability and the other  stretches the limits of compactness.  Various electronic systems are also in development.

Jonathan is not new to fabricating dive gear.   He has experience in developing underwater equipment.  Below is a housing he made for a video camera, and also a dive light which he built.  (His dive light has been pressure tested to 400 meters in a chamber!)      The CEDU expects many wonderful developments coming from Jonathan in the future.

Another creation and life blood of Jonathan is the ChickenHeadLab .   This watering hole, located near Osan AFB, is The Place To Be.   The CEDU has recently certified the ChickenHeadLab as an Official Training Tank & Post Dive Off-Gassing Station.  All forms of pre and post dive planning, execution and debriefing can be conducted there in a most spirited way.

ChickenHeadLab now certified as an
Official CEDU Training Tank & Post Dive Off Gassing Station

Congratulations Jonathan for all you have given us, and remember to always dive in safety.

Respectfully Submitted,
Robert Iannello,
Director, CEDU

See you in the Tank, Boys and Girls

Remember the CEDU reminds you to always think of Safety when you take the plunge.

There's only one step down from here, baby,
It's called the land of permanent bliss.
What's a sweetheart like you doin' in a dump like this?

(And now a word  from our sponsor.....)

FEOR is there.
The only rebreather backed by Neptunus Rex himself.

Gentleman, Choose Your Equipment.

With so many choices in closed circuit gear, which do you choose?
The FEOR comes in many Styles and Configurations.
Become an UnAuthorized HomeBuilder and make your own.
Then you can
Dive Into Oblivion with the CEDU.

Please note that all items seen on  these pages that come into contact with high pressure oxygen have been Oxygen Cleaned, Oxygen Converted, Oxygen Compatible or Designed for Oxygen use.
You will be in for a rude awakening if you connect a scuba first stage to a high pressure oxygen tank; the rubber/nitrile o-ring(s),  internal lubricating grease, moving potentially spark generating parts,  and other contaminants are all potential sources of heat / inigition / fuel which can have catastrophic consequences in a high pressure oxygen environment.
Building Rebreathers are a fun hobby, but it can also be fatal even before you make it to the pond.

OSHA States:
"Compressed oxygen cannot be used in a device designed for compressed air because minute amounts of oil or other foreign matter in the device components can cause an explosion."  In fact, 30 CFR 11 prohibits certification of any device designed to permit interchangeable use of oxygen and air.
It is an accepted safety rule that:  OXYGEN NEVER BE USED IN A DEVICE UNLESS IT IS SPECIFICALLY  DESIGNED FOR THAT PURPOSE.

Congratulations to the latest Honors Recipients.
A major step into CEDU membership has been accomplished.
Additional information about membership will start with an Application. Other requirements such as the MudRun and the Rough Water Swim#1, #2 follow.... Good Luck.
